ABOUT LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP

A proud rural community nestled along the Delaware Bayshore in Cumberland County, New Jersey — rooted in history, connected to the land, and home to over 140 years of community spirit.

OUR STORY

WELCOME TO LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP

Lawrence Township was incorporated on February 17, 1885 from portions of Fairfield Township, and named in honor of Captain James Lawrence — commander of the frigate USS Chesapeake and a naval hero of the War of 1812. Captain Lawrence is best remembered for his dying command, “Don’t Give Up the Ship” — words that have inspired Americans for over two centuries.

Spanning 38.5 square miles of productive farmland, tidal marshes, and scenic waterways, Lawrence Township is home to a close-knit community that values its agricultural heritage, natural landscapes, and the quality of small-town life.

NATURAL AREAS

THE DELAWARE BAYSHORE

Lawrence Township’s eastern border meets the Delaware Bay, one of the most ecologically significant estuaries on the Atlantic coast. Our tidal marshes, wetlands, and bayshore provide critical habitat for migratory birds, fish, and wildlife while offering residents and visitors breathtaking natural scenery.

The bayshore and surrounding natural areas are a defining feature of Lawrence Township’s character — a reminder of the unspoiled natural beauty that makes our corner of New Jersey truly special.

The Delaware Bayshore region is also home to a rich fishing and oystering heritage that has shaped the culture and economy of communities like Lawrence Township for centuries. The waters, marshes, and shoreline remain a vital part of who we are — a connection to the natural world that residents cherish and work to protect for future generations.
